OmniThreadLibrary Everywhere

For the last year and some, Sean B. Durkin has been working on the mobile port of the OmniThreadLibrary. There was lots to be done, as OTL was never designed to be a portable library – after all, it was created in Delphi 2007 times.

Recently I merged his latest commits into the mobile OmniThreadLibrary branch. This version is (by his words) functionally complete (although it may be missing some very recent OTL features) but is very much untested. So Sean is asking everybody that is interested in multithreading on OS/X, iOS, and Android to help him find bugs and to make OTL even more awesome!

Please report any findings to his OmniThreadLibrary-For-Mobile-DevelopmentProject on Google+. I am currently working on other aspects of the OTL and didn’t I put much energy into checking his work.

Portable OmniThreadLibrary

If you care about running OmniThreadLibrary on mobile devices and on OS X, please join the OmniThreadLibrary-For-Mobile-DevelopmentProject page on Google+ where Sean has started to document his progress on doing exactly that – breaking the chains of Windows and bringing OmniThreadLibrary to all supported platforms!

Go, Sean!

Parallel programming with XE7–reminder

A note for Slovenian readers.

Pohitrite programe z RAD Studiom XE7

This is an invitation for the XE7 workshop in Slovenia which is targeted at Slovenian programmers.

RAD Studio XE7 prinaša nov način paralelizacije programov. S kodo, zbrano v enoti System.

RAD Studio XE5, C++, iOS etc … in Slovenia

This Tuesday (March 4th) Embarcadero and Marand are organizing a RAD Studio XE5 presentation in Ljubljana. We’ll be showing great features that were implemented in RAD Studio in the past few years – from 64-bit Windows compilation, Unicode support and styling to multiplatform development, LiveBindings and FireDAC. For the first time in Slovenia we’ll be presenting the new REST library and C++ support for iOS.

Presentation will be given in Slovenian language. Register here.

XE4 for iOS in Slovenia

I just came home from the XE4/iOS presentation in Ljubljana and if I had to summarize the participant response it would be: “A very nice product, we’ll probably buy it when the Android is supported too.”

This (and a relatively small attendance) clearly shows that iOS is just not that popular in Slovenia. Even more, most of big Delphi-using companies in Slovenia have no interest in creating fresh, modern software and are still living in the “interesting, but we don’t need it” world :(

Thanks to everybody for coming to the presentation!

XE4 in Ljubljana

If you live in Slovenia and if you are programming in Delphi or C++Builder, make sure to reserve some time for the next Wednesday (22nd) for the RAD Studio XE4 presentation in Ljubljana.

Most of the presentation will focus on the iOS development with RAD Studio XE4. More details here: Marand.

How do you build FireMonkey iOS applications on Lion?

Delphi uses FPC 2.6.0 to do the iOS compilation.

image

I have Xcode 4.3.1 installed (no idea why the version is not displayed in the list).

image

FPC 2.6.0 doesn’t recognize it. Apparently it only works with Xcode up to 4.2.

image

Apple only offers XCode 4.3.1 for Lion.

So I’m asking you – can I really use Lion to compile FireMonkey iOS applications? Doesn’t seem so.

Sad smile

Detecting Device Movement

For my next quest I decided to find out how accelerometer works in web applications. IOW, I wanted to control an object on my HTML page just by moving my iPad around.

I limited my quest to iOS because that’s my favorite toy. don’t know yet how to do it in Android – this StackOverflow post hinted that access from bare JavaScript may not be possible. PhoneGap somehow does that, but it’s quite possibly that they implement Java wrapper that exposes native accelerometer data to your JavaScript. But that’s just guessing.
